Animation and Rigging tools integration in Maya
Unreal Engine 4 comes with a very powerful and handy set of tools i.e Animation and Rigging Tools, also known as A.R.Ts . These tools are used for animating and rigging the characters using Autodesk MAYA software and are extremely useful for Animators to develop character animations for gameplay.
The best thing about using Animation and Rigging Tools for Maya is that you get a default character rig model which you can use for creating your animations . Then you can export these animations to Unreal Engine 4 to test them in your gameplay. Later you can replace it with your own character model whenever you feel comfortable.
This tool is a part of Unreal Engine 4 project files. To add this tool’s features to your Autodesk MAYA software , you need to follow some simple steps :
- Locate the script file for Animation and Rigging Tools. Go to the installation directory of Unreal Engine 4 in your system. Generally “
C:\Program Files\Epic Games“. Locate script file
"Epic Games\4.8\Engine\Extras\Maya_AnimationRiggingTools\MayaTools"and copy this file.
- Now Go to Location
"C:\Users\UserName\Documents\maya\scripts"and paste the copied file here.
NOTE: You need not to paste this file in the script folder of installation directory of Maya. Paste in above mentioned location.
- Now open MAYA and you will be shown an error popup, just like the image below.
- Click on Browse and go to the same location as mentioned in step-1. Select MayaTools folder and click Save.
You will notice changes in your Maya and a menu will be added in your Top menu bar just as in image below.
So now you can use Animation and Rigging Tools by Epic Games in your Autodesk Maya to create Character Rigs and animating them.
